Surf legend Gerry Lopez stood next to me on stand-up paddleboard, watching a bump in the ocean grow as it inched toward us. "Paddle, paddle, you got it," the "Pipeline master" said in a gentle, encouraging tone. I dug my paddle deep into the ocean's clear blue surface, trying to maintain my balance, and the wave picked the board up under my feet. Soon I was gliding down the line clutching my paddle with Lopez, one of the best tube riders and most respected surfers in the world, behind me.

A new tradition in Nayarit, SUP races only 10 minutes south of Punta Mita! Every month, locals and visitors get together at the Riviera Nayarit Marina in La Cruz for a fun night of races involving Paddling and Sailing: SUP boards, kayaks, rowing Inflatables or dinghies, anything you can paddle! The race is super fun – in prior competitions, the organizers drop little balloons along the track of the race. Each competitor needs to paddle and collect as many balloons as they can. Based on the registration of the attendees the possible classes will be determined, such as: Rowing inflatables, Rowing hard dingy, Kayaks, SUP Race, SUP Cruz, SUP 2 person and Sail. Prizes for the winners. Pacific Paddle has 1o SUP boards available at no cost to participacte. So, no excuses! Let’s paddle!
The first National SUP Championship will take place in Punta de Mita Sayulita. The event will be open to Mexican competitors in several categories, hoping to attract the finest athletes in this increasingly popular sport. 60 participants, currently members of the Mexican Surfing Federation. A series of additional events, such as a beachwear fashion show and a live music concert, are also in the works and will be announced in the near future.

Locals went Gaga... over Lady surfing our very favorite break, La Lancha. Who taught Lady G to catch a wave? It was our little monster Josue‘El Bota’ Villegas. Josue said he preferred to keep their conversation confidential ...he did say that they talked a lot, and she told him to call her Stefani.
